Paauilo resident is ID’d as victim of drowning
A fisherman swept into the ocean near Honokaa while picking opihi Friday has been identified as 27-year-old James McGivern Jr. of Paauilo.
The Hawaii Fire Department recovered the man’s body in the Kawela Beach area, and he was pronounced dead at the Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua Emergency Room.
Autopsy findings indicate that the death was accidental, due to drowning.
Man charged in attack on officers
A 20-year-old Kailua-Kona man has been charged with assaulting two police officers responding to a disturbance call Sunday.
Garrick Scott Simmons was charged Tuesday with two counts of first-degree assault on a police officer, two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, resisting arrest, first-degree burglary, kidnapping and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle. Simmons was released on $20,500 bail.
At 5:13 p.m. Sunday, Kona patrol officers responded to the report of a man with a knife threatening people at a Pumehana Street residence in Kailua-Kona.
Detectives determined that a man entered the home of a 21-year-old acquaintance and threatened him with a knife. The suspect later took items from the man’s vehicle. He fled and was found by patrol officers, who arrested him. During the arrest, the suspect threatened and assaulted the officers, police said.
One officer suffered a concussion and sprained knee, while a second sustained a sprained knee and abrasions. Both were treated and released from Kona Community Hospital.
Kauai man found dead in California
A 29-year-old Lihue man was found dead on the porch of a vacant Northern California home earlier this month, Kauai’s Garden Island newspaper reported.
Allen Brown died of blunt trauma to the head sometime overnight between Sept. 4 and 5, according to the Bay Area News Group.
The Garden Island on Wednesday said a person from Kauai had filed a missing-person report with the San Jose Police Department, but the case was not registered with Kauai police.
Brown, who is from Virginia, moved to Kauai in 2009, the newspaper said.
