September 2015 figures to be a challenging and lucrative month for the University of Hawaii football team.
With Wednesday’s joint announcement of a three-game series with Wisconsin, the Rainbow Warriors will soon be booked for road games at Ohio State and Wisconsin that month.
The two games — Sept. 12 against the Buckeyes and Sept. 26 versus the Badgers — will pay the ‘Bows a combined $2.3 million, according to UH officials.
Athletic director Ben Jay, a former Ohio State associate athletic director, said the two games "will give our team and fans an opportunity to experience Big Ten football."
The Ohio State deal, said to be worth $1.2 million, is expected to be announced shortly. The Wisconsin game brings a $1.1 million check.
The two other games in the Wisconsin series — Sept. 4, 2021 at Aloha Stadium and Sept. 17, 2022 at Camp Randall Stadium — will pay the visitors $400,000 each under terms of the agreement, associate athletic director Carl Clapp said.
In 2015, UH is also contracted to play Colorado at Aloha Stadium and is looking for one more nonconference game to complete its schedule.
UH is 1-5 against Wisconsin with all but the 1987 game played in Honolulu.
Other marquee nonconference opponents include: Colorado (2014), Michigan and Kansas (2016), UCLA (2017), Army (2018), Washington (2019), Arizona (2020), and Oregon State (2021).
