Suspect in cabdriver stabbing rode moped
Honolulu police detectives are investigating the stabbing of a taxicab driver in Waikiki.
The attack took place at about 2:50 p.m. Friday near Ala Wai Boulevard and Kalaimoku Street.
Police shut down two makai lanes of traffic along Ala Wai Boulevard for several hours. The lanes reopened Friday evening.
The driver, 41, who works for Charley’s Taxi, was stabbed in the arm by a man who fled the scene on a moped.
Rushed to a trauma hospital in serious condition by the city Emergency Medical Services Division, the taxi driver’s condition was later upgraded to stable, according to police.
A Charley’s Taxi driver who witnessed the attack said the assailant stabbed the taxi driver while he was standing on the side of the boulevard.
Second man arrested in home invasion
Hawaii County police have arrested the second man wanted in connection with a home invasion robbery in the Leilani Estates subdivision July 24.
At 12:20 p.m. Thursday police arrested 30-year-old Kawika Benny Kahee at a home in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision.
Under a grand jury indictment, he is charged with second-degree robbery, third-degree assault, second-degree theft, third-degree promoting a dangerous drug and drug paraphernalia.
He was also arrested and charged with contempt of court and two counts of no-bail probation revocation. His bail for the remaining offenses was set at $58,000.
At 2:20 p.m. Monday detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section arrested and charged Mark McCurley on charges of second-degree robbery, second-degree theft and kidnapping. His bail was set at $85,000.
Boy, 14, accused of assaulting older teen
Police arrested a 14-year-old boy Thursday for allegedly assaulting a 17-year-old boy last week at an Aina Haina school.
Police said the younger teen allegedly assaulted the older teen and caused substantial injury at 1:25 p.m. Sept. 11.
After the arrest, police released the teen Thursday pending further investigation.
Man faces charges for hitting car with bat
Prosecutors charged a 45-year-old Kalihi man Thursday for allegedly shattering a 43-year-old man’s vehicle windshield with a baseball bat.
Leighton Kumai was charged with first-degree criminal property damage Thursday. His bail was set at $30,000.
Police said Kumai believed the man had stolen tools from his nephew’s truck. He allegedly followed the man and blocked him in traffic.
Kumai then allegedly used a baseball bat to smash the man’s windshield, police said. The incident occurred at 9:23 p.m. Wednesday, and he was arrested at 10:15 p.m.
Police seek inmate who fled work furlough
The public’s help is being sought to locate a man who failed to return to the Laumaka Work Furlough Center in Honolulu on Thursday night, the state Department of Public Safety said.
Ernest Vierra, a work furlough inmate, was reported missing after a head count was conducted at Laumaka at about 8:20 p.m. Thursday, Public Safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz said.
Vierra, who is serving time for robbery and unauthorized control of a vehicle, is on "community custody status," the lowest custody level, Schwartz said.
