‘Five-0’ premiere features stars galore

Across the country, fans of "Hawaii Five-0" are aching for Friday’s fourth-season kickoff, but here on Oahu, where the crime drama is shot, fans not only get to see the premiere a day early, they get a red-carpet party on the beach with the cast. The Sunset on the Beach celebration has become a tradition for the CBS show, attracting thousands of fans who watch the free outdoor screening from lawn chairs and beach mats at Queen’s Surf Beach in Waikiki. It’s a blast. Thursday’s event, which starts at 6 p.m., is expected to draw Alex O’Loughlin, Daniel Dae Kim, Michelle Borth and Masi Oka. When you’re bombarded with a bumper crop of lilikoi, there’s only so much juice, cake or mochi your family can consume. In such situations, turn to the "Little Hawaiian Liliko’i Cookbook," by Gail Hercher (Mutual Publishing, $7.95), a handy book that offers relief in the form of savory recipes such as salsa and curry, as well as instructions for making jelly, curd and syrup that will allow you to take a breather and enjoy lilikoi again at a later date.

‘Infinity’ scarf won’t flap around

As a parrot is drawn to shiny objects, I have always been drawn to fabrics. Scarves are a great expression of this love, and they make dressing for comfort much less dowdy. But our tradewinds can make keeping a scarf secure challenging. Enter the tube, or "infinity," scarf. My sister-in-law sent me two for my birthday, and I loved them so much I recently bought another on sale at Sports Authority for $8.97. They seem to be everywhere at the moment, from Ross to Nordstrom, in a seductive array of patterns and textures.

Fox’s animated favorites are back

Picking a favorite among Fox’s "Animation Domination" lineup — the new season starts Sunday — is like asking a mother to pick a favorite child. Each has its own goofy personality, but you love them all, even the naughty one — I’m talking about you, "Family Guy." The baby of the bunch — the Emmy-nominated "Bob’s Burgers" at 8:30 p.m. — has moved up the pecking order with its offbeat humor and top-notch voice cast led by H. Jon Benjamin ("Archer" on FX). One of the simple joys of the show is the reveal of the daily burger special: "Final Kraut Down," "Poutine on the Ritz," "She’s a Super Leek" and "Pepper Don’t Preach," to name a few. Meanwhile, oldest child "The Simpsons" returns to top form with its 25th-season premiere at 8 p.m., a sendup of Showtime’s "Homeland," with Kristen Wiig guesting. As Mr. Burns would say, "Excellent."
