More details have been released about the under-construction Gansevoort Las Vegas, formerly Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon. Much of the transformation involves the parking areas, with a portion of the second-floor garage being converted into a 300-seat restaurant that will overlook the Strip and Bellagio fountains.
The famous spiral ramp has been demolished, and a new ramp is being added on the north side of the garage. An additional three-story parking structure will be built on the east side, with a tunnel connecting to the hotel. The rooms and casino are being completely remade, while three floors are being added to the top of the hotel to create Drai’s Beach Club and Nightclub and the rooftop pool. The promotional push emphasizes that the Gansevoort will be the first “boutique” hotel on the Strip that’s not housed within another facility. The opening is scheduled for early 2014.
>> Rooms demolished: The hotel wing of downtown’s Western Hotel-Casino has been demolished. The casino portion of the complex is expected to be preserved and possibly renovated for use as a bar or other noncasino business.
>> Candy back: The candy machine that disappeared at the Gold Coast is back. Similar coin-operated machines can be found at Sam’s Town and El Cortez.
>> Big money: Pay-per-view buys for the Mayweather/Alvarez championship fight earlier this month are projected to reach 2.2 million and generate $150 million in receipts, breaking the record of
$136 million. Attendance at the fight was 16,146, resulting in a live-gate record of $20,003,150.
QUESTION: I understand that the new movie “Runner Runner” is about a scandal in the world of online poker. Can you elaborate?
ANSWER: It’s something of a merging of scandals, including the surreptitious reading of hole cards and the pilfering of accounts on deposit (both really happened at offshore websites). But while the movie uses these subjects as a foundation, the details are barely touched upon and there’s very little poker playing in this one. A “Rounders” it isn’t.
