Hawaii makes tennis final at nationals
Hawaii reached the final of the U.S. Tennis Association League (18-and-older) 3.0 national championships Sunday, falling to a team from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The team from Honolulu was captained by Joshua Potterton. Players were Brandon Asuka, Aaron Soon, William Barrett, Jordan Sasaki, Kazuhito Kurokawa, Andrew Perez and Brian Cadorna.
In the final at Tucson, Ariz., the Caribbean team won all five matches. Earlier Sunday, Honolulu beat a team from Phoenix 3-2 in a semifinal. Hawaii won its flight Friday and Saturday.
Gymnasts are Scholastic All-Americans
Four Hawaii female collegiate gymnasts were named Scholastic All-Americans in recognition of their achievements during last school year.
The four are Kahoku Palafox (Arizona State, Maryknoll), Jenna Frowein (Stanford, Punahou), Carson Tabiolo (Michigan State, Moanalua) and Mackenzie Sato (Cornell, ‘Iolani).
The National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women made the announcement in August. NACGC/W Scholastic All-America honors are awarded to college gymnasts with cumulative grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher.
Vulcans take sixth place in GolfWeek event
Hawaii Hilo finished in sixth place in the GolfWeek Fall Invitational at the Sunriver Crosswater Golf Club in Bend, Ore., on Tuesday.
Dalen Yamauchi lead the Vulcans with a seventh-place finish with a score of 228. Corey Kozuma had UHH’s best score in the final round, finishing even par and placing 14th overall.
