Haina joins elite group
Cal State Northridge’s five-set victory over UC Davis on Sunday was highlighted by the 1,000th career kill for ‘Iolani alumna Mahina Haina.
Haina, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter, put down 15 kills, becoming the ninth Matador to reach the 1,000-kill career milestone.
The 2010 ‘Iolani grad is a two-time All-Big West honorable mention pick and had played in 71 consecutive matches and 266 straight sets before missing the final set against Coppin State on Sept. 19. She sat out the next game the following morning before returning later that day to put down a season-high 17 kills in a four-set loss to current No. 1 Washington.
The Matadors are 11-3 overall heading into a weekend road trip at UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton.
ILH rivals team up in win
On the same day No. 1 Punahou blew out ‘Iolani 56-0 in a local high school football game, alumni from both schools combined to help deliver the Washington (Mo.) Bears a big win.
Starting defensive backs Andrew Skalman (‘Iolani ’10) and Quincy Marting (Punahou ’12) combined to make 20 tackles in Washington’s 31-14 victory over Centre College on Saturday at Francis Field in St. Louis.
Skalman, named to the D3Football.com team of the week last week, had a career-high 11 tackles, including one for loss. He also recorded his ninth career interception to help hand Centre College its first loss.
Marting added a career-high nine tackles and broke up a pass.
Skalman’s interception came midway through the second quarter, leading to a Bears touchdown to push Washington’s lead to 17-7.
Skalman is third on the team with 24 tackles and tied for the team lead with three interceptions. Marting has made 16 tackles, 14 of them solo stops.
