Oahu drivers will encounter lane closures on Kalanianaole Highway between Hanauma Bay and Sandy Beach the rest of this year for bridge repairs, state transportation officials said Thursday. 

Drivers are encouraged to use Kealahou Street and Lunalilo Home Road as a detour, and they should anticipate delays and drive carefully through the area, according to the Department of Transportation officials.

The closures will start next week with construction on that stretch from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and traffic will be contraflowed, officials said.

The full road will be closed 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday from the Koko Head Shooting Ranch Complex to the Halona Blowhole Lookout, and drivers should use Kealahou Street and Lunalilo Home Road as a detour, according to the DOT. 

The $2.4 million project aims to fix and strengthen barriers and repair the road on Ihiihilauakea Bridge, officials say.
