BYUH volleyball team sweeps Dominican
Shih Ting Chen had 17 kills and Erh Fang Hsu added 11 kills to lead No. 6 Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 26-24, 25-12, 25-17 win over Dominican in a Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball match Saturday in San Rafael, Calif.
Ying Chun Chen had 41 assists and 14 digs for BYUH (11-1, 6-1). Jessica Jones had eight kills for Dominican (2-14, 1-7).
» Rupia Inck had 20 kills to lead No. 21 Fresno Pacific to a 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 win over Hawaii Pacific in Fresno, Calif. Jessie Alcorn had 14 kills for the Sunbirds (9-5, 4-3). Pomai Recca had 18 kills and Samantha Rummans had 11 for Hawaii Pacific (11-4, 5-2).
» Notre Dame de Namur rallied to beat Hawaii Hilo 25-21, 29-31, 25-27, 25-21, 15-11 in Belmont, Calif. Dominique Tarrant had 24 kills and Kawai Robins-Hardy, a Kamehameha graduate, had 19 kills for Notre Dame de Namur (4-10, 2-4). Marley Strand-Nicolaisen had 26 kills and Kyndra Scott-Trevino had 13 kills for Hilo (5-7, 0-7), which has lost seven straight.
Sawada wins St. Martin’s Invitational
Hawaii Hilo golfer Kristen Sawada won the St. Martin’s Invitational on Saturday in Tumwater, Wash. Sawada finished the 36-hole tournament at 6-over-par 150. She entered the day tied for third and shot a low round of 2-over 74 to win the individual title by two strokes.
The Vulcans finished with a two-round total of 627, just three strokes behind champion British Columbia. Kacie Harada tied for fifth (155), Jade Salvador was 12th (159), Dayna Bersamin tied for 17th (163) and Erika Morihiro tied for 21st (165).
Hawaii finishes tennis tournament
The University of Hawaii women’s tennis team went 5-1 in singles and 3-1 in doubles on the final day of its Anuenue Invitational at the UH Tennis Complex.
Hawaii’s Rebecca Faltusz completed her suspended game from Friday night by beating Hawaii Pacific’s Vivian Hansen 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday. Faltusz then went on to beat HPU’s Sophia Tavitian 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles play, the UH duo of Kelsey Daguio and Daisy Green beat HPU’s Tavitian and Celina Goetti 8-0. Hawaii finished the three-day tournament with a 19-3 record in singles and 10-3 record in doubles.
Penalty kick lifts Hilo soccer
Lindsey Poulsen’s penalty kick in the 60th minute helped Hawaii Hilo beat Dixie State 1-0 in a Pacific West Conference women’s soccer match on Saturday in St. George, Utah. Jenna Hufford had four saves for the Vulcans (5-3-1, 2-3). Dixie State drops to 4-4-2 overall, 4-2-1 in league play.
» Hawaii Hilo and host Dixie State played to a 3-3, double-overtime tie in a men’s soccer game. Anthony Novella had two goals and James Yamane had one for Hilo (3-4-1, 1-3-1). Jara Eshete of Dixie State (2-5-3, 1-4-2) scored in the closing seconds of regulation to tie it at 3.
» Brais Garcia scored both goals to help the Hawaii Pacific men beat Point Loma Nazarene 2-0 in San Diego. HPU (5-3-1, 3-1) didn’t allow any shots on goal by Point Loma (5-4-2, 3-1-2).
» Andrea Aguirre scored in the 82nd minute to lead the Hawaii Pacific women past host Point Loma Nazarene 1-0. HPU (3-6, 1-3) withstood two Point Loma (5-4-1, 4-1-1) shots in the final minutes.
McKenna finishes fourth for HPU
Fiona McKenna finished fourth to help the Hawaii Pacific women’s cross country team place seventh on Saturday at the Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem, Ore. McKenna finished the 5,000-meter race in 17 minutes, 55.27 seconds. HPU placed seventh in the team standings with 152 points. HPU’s top five included Jamie Neal (22nd, 18:50.30), Nohemi Martinez (33rd, 19:03.21), Malia Gonzales (46th, 19:15.77) and Mary Botsford (53rd, 19:20.23).
In the men’s 8,000-meter race, HPU placed sixth with 165 points. The Sea Warriors’ top five finishers were Leandro Santillan (12th, 25:21.26), Fermin Murillo-Villagran (17th, 25:29.01), Jorge Mendez (42nd, 26:16.20), Marco Perez (43rd, 26:18.07) and Corey Jennings (61st, 26:39.15).
