$18M grant promotes biomedical careers
The University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine has been awarded $18.4 million over five years to foster biomedical careers among students at the UH-Hilo College of Pharmacy, Chaminade University, Hawaii Pacific University and UH community colleges.
"Students in our program who may, in fact, be the first in their family to attend college now have the exciting opportunity to pursue biomedical research as a career," said Robert Nichols, principal investigator with what will be called the Hawaii Statewide Research and Education Partnership.
The money comes from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.

The supplies included six units of blood, a pack of platelets and two transfusion kits. The supplies were dropped by parachute. The ship’s doctor was treating a 70-year-old man suffering from internal bleeding.
The ship is scheduled to arrive in Lahaina today.
Carvalho to run for a new term as Kauai mayor
Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. has announced he will run for re-election.
Carvalho, 52, announced his plans over the weekend during a fundraiser in Kilohana attended by approximately 1,500 people.
If re-elected, he said, he will continue his 2020 plan, which includes initiatives for affordable housing, curbside recycling, covered shelters for bus stops and development of a new landfill and resource recovery park.
He was mayor for a two-year term following the death of Mayor Bryan Baptiste in June 2008. Two years later Carvalho was re-elected to a full four-year term.
Carvalho also worked as an employee and supervisor of the Public Works Recreation Division, was director of the Offices of Community Assistance and served as director of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
