Sex offender from Utah caught on Kauai
A 51-year-old fugitive sex offender from Utah was arrested in Kapaa, Kauai, on Friday by members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
Michael Nielsen of Taylorsville, Utah, was being sought for parole violation.
The Marshals Service said Nielsen is a convicted sex offender who fled Utah and was located at about 9:15 a.m. by task force officers at a residence on Haleilio Road in Kapaa, where he was allegedly using the alias Russell Pearson.
On Sept. 6, 2002, Nielsen was arrested and later convicted of two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child in the first degree, one count of violation of protective order and one count of tampering with a witness/juror. The female victim was an 8-year-old family member at the time of the incident, the Marshals Service said.
Collision injures police officer and driver
A 37-year-old policewoman and a man were seriously injured in a Friday morning crash on Kapiolani Boulevard near Sheridan Street.
The driver of a black Mercedes, a 69-year-old man, crashed into a building at 1326 Kapiolani Blvd. at 12:20 a.m. after colliding with a blue-and-white police car, according to an Emergency Medical Services report. Paramedics took both victims to the hospital in serious condition.
Gun goes off during Ahuimanu Park fight
A shot was fired during a fight among a group of young men Thursday afternoon at Ahuimanu Park.
Police said the group of men, roughly ages 18 to 20, was involved in a fight at about 4:15 p.m. when one of them pulled out a gun and fired a shot.
After the gun was fired, the men dispersed, police said.
Police used a helicopter to search the area, but no arrests were made.
Fatal crash shuts multiple Farrington lanes
Police closed all eastbound lanes, and one westbound lane, of Farrington Highway at Honokai Hale near Kapolei due to a fatal motor vehicle crash Friday night.
The crash occurred east of Laaloa Street at 9:08 p.m.
Details of the crash were not immediately available.
All eastbound traffic is being turned around at Laaloa Street.
Suspect wanted in robbery in Kahuku
Police are looking for a man who robbed a 33-year-old man Thursday morning in Kahuku.
The suspect allegedly hit the man in the head and took his backpack sometime between 8:35 and 8:50 a.m. Thursday and fled in a vehicle, police said. Police have opened a first-degree robbery case.
