Remains near trail reveal gunshot wound
The medical examiner’s office has determined that the man whose skeletal remains were found between the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail and the shoreline Sept. 15 died of a gunshot wound to the head.
The medical examiner has not verified the man’s identity. Police have classified the case as an unattended death.
Four hikers descending from the Makapuu Lighthouse trail toward a set of tide pools on the shoreline discovered the skeletal remains near a cave along the cliff. Police and fire crews worked together to retrieve the body and airlift it to a landing zone at Sandy Beach Park.
