The Hawaii volleyball team didn’t have to do a thing to move up a spot in both the NCAA’s Ratings Percentage Index and the AVCA Coaches Top 25 released today.

The Rainbow Wahine (16-2), who had a bye week last week, went from No. 10 to No. 9 in the RPI and No. 9 to No. 8 in the rankings that saw a number of upsets create movement among the teams above them.

Texas (13-2), the preseason No. 1, returned to the top spot in the poll, receiving 44 of the 60 first-place votes. The Longhorns, remaining at No. 1 in the RPI, were at No. 3 in  last week’s coaches poll.

In the RPI, Penn State (No. 2) and Florida (No. 3) swapped positions from last week. USC remained at No. 4, followed by Creighton, Washington, Missouri, and Stanford.

(The RPI is a measure of strength of schedule used by the NCAA selection committee to seed the postseason tournament.)

In the coaches poll, Penn State (16-2, 12 votes) moved up two spots to No. 2 and Washington (15-1, 4 votes, jumped three spots to No. 3. Former No. 1 USC (17-2) fell three spots after being swept by unranked Arizona Sunday.

Florida (18-2) also dropped three spots to No. 5. The Gators were upset by unbeaten Missouri Sunday. The Tigers (23-0) went from No. 18 to No. 11 in today’s poll.

Despite losing to Washington Sunday, Stanford (13-4) moved up one place to No. 6. Minnesota (18-3) jumped over Hawaii from No. 10 to No. 7.

Rounding out the top 10 were San Diego (15-3), up two spots to No. 9, and Michigan State (17-3), down five spots to No. 10. The Spartans lost twice on the road last week to Minnesota and Wisconsin. 

Hawaii (5-1 Big West) returns to conference play this week with road matches at Cal State Northridge (16-4, 6-1) Thursday and UC Davis (11-9, 3-4) Saturday.
