Tanuvasa sidelined with knee injury
Punahou defensive back/wide receiver Jordan Tanuvasa is done for the season after suffering a torn ACL.
The junior was injured in the second half of a 59-7 win over Pac-Five on Oct. 11. He was a starting point guard for the basketball team, which was 22-8 last season and reached the semifinal round of the state tournament.
"They think it’s a partial tear," Buffanblu hoops coach Darren Matsuda said, noting that Tanuvasa is expected to be out for six to 12 months. "For him, I feel really bad. He had the (foot) injury last year, but he had a strong summer."
Tanuvasa scored 18 points in one half during a summer-league exhibition game against Mater Dei.
"It depends on how well his rehab goes," Matsuda added. "He’s always been one of our hardest workers."
Morgado steps down
After 18 seasons in high school coaching, Kelii Morgado is due for a break.
The Kapaa football coach will step down after six seasons with the Warriors, reviving a once-struggling program and leading them to a KIF title in 2011.
"Originally I thought I’d be around for 40 years, but 18 years, it’s time to move on. I’ve enjoyed it and I’m proud of the things we’ve accomplished," he said. "I have two sons (Tiago, 10, and Mateo, 15 months) and it’s time for them to have their dad back. I told my seniors, ‘You were born the year that I started.’ "
Prior to Kapaa, he was at Kauai for eight years as head coach, leading the Red Raiders to four KIF championships. He was an assistant coach before that.
After guiding Kauai to four league titles, he was forced out in the spring of 2007 but remained there as a teacher.
Kapaa finished second in the KIF this fall with a 3-3 mark (4-4 overall), losing to league champ Kauai three times by a total of seven points.
