Sharks were feeding on a whale carcass drifting off Kualoa Friday.

Swimmers are being advised to stay out of the water at Kualoa on Friday after sharks were spotted feeding on a whale carcass.

A warning was issued this afternoon by both Ocean Safety and the Honolulu Fire Department for waters off Mokolii Island (Chinaman’s Hat) and Kualoa Beach Park. Signs have been placed along the beach.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration began monitoring the whale carcass about four to five miles off Windward Oahu on Thursday.

Fishermen reported seeing a 30- to 40-foot sperm whale carcass Wednesday night.
