Power back on for all residents after crash
Electricity was restored Saturday to more than 1,000 Kuliouou residents who lost power when a motor vehicle crash caused four utility poles to fall, a Hawaiian Electric Co. spokeswoman said.
Around 400 customers had their power restored as of Saturday morning, and by noon another 100 customers were with power, HECO spokeswoman Barb Heckathorn said. Everyone affected had their power restored by 2:45 p.m. and the road was reopened for use at that time.
Heckathorn said a motor vehicle crash around 3:30 a.m. on Kuliouou Road caused the downed poles.
Work to restore power was originally expected to continue throughout the day.
Hilo farm found to be infested with coffee pest
HILO » A tiny beetle that damages coffee beans continues its destructive march across Hawaii island, home to the famous Kona brew.
State agriculture officials say at least one Hilo-area coffee farm is infested with the coffee berry borer. The bug, native to Angola, first was discovered near Kona in September 2010.
Andrea Kawabata of the University of Hawaii said the new infestation was confirmed by the state Department of Agriculture.
The females burrow into the fruit to lay their eggs, causing damage that can make the beans worthless. The beetles are about the size of a sesame seed.
So far no infestations have been found on any other islands.
