Maui’s Lenny wins standup-paddling title
Kai Lenny of Maui won his third standup-paddling surfing world title Saturday in France, defeating Caio Vaz of Brazil, 16.5 to 5.8.
Lenny, 21, finished with three wins in the four-event series, taking first place at Sunset Beach in Hawaii and at Huntington Beach in California. He finished fifth in Brazil.
Kauai surfer second in world junior event
Kauai surfer Tatiana Weston-Webb finished second Saturday in the HD World Junior Championships in Florionapolis, Brazil, losing to Ella Williams of New Zealand, 11.97 to 9.23.
HPU runner first in PacWest cross country
Hawaii Pacific’s Fiona McKenna, a junior from Ireland, took women’s individual honors Saturday in the Pacific West Conference cross country championships in Novato, Calif., finishing the 5-kilometer event in 17:16.1
HPU had 45 points to place second overall to Azusa Pacific (34).
Junior Leandro Santillan of Argentina finished third overall to lead the HPU men to a second-place finish behind Cal Baptist. Santillan ran the 8K event in 26:45.4.
BYU-Hawaii blanks Holy Names in soccer
Michael Moreno, Bent Jenson and Besser Davila scored as Brigham Young-Hawaii (8-3-3, 6-2-2) beat Holy Names 3-0 in Pacific West Conference men’s soccer Saturday in Laie.
Holy Names dropped to 5-9 and 4-6.
» Jon Eldon scored an unassisted goal in overtime to lift Academy of Art (9-5-3, 6-3-2) to a 2-1 victory over Hawaii Pacific (8-5-2, 6-3-1) at Atherton Field in Kaneohe.
In PacWest women’s play:
» Kim Micheletti scored in the 104th minute for the golden goal in double overtime as Brigham Young-Hawaii (7-4-2, 6-3-1) extended its winning streak to six with a 1-0 victory over Holy Names (4-11-1, 0-9-1).
» Erika Ellis scored twice in the first half to lead Hawaii Pacific (6-7-2, 4-4-2) to a 4-2 victory over Academy of Art (3-13-1, 2-8-1) at Atherton Field.
HPU, Chaminade sweep in volleyball
Freshman Pomai Recca and sophomore Kasey Thompson had nine kills each Saturday as Hawaii Pacific (16-8, 10-6) swept Dominican (9-17, 6-10) in Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball at the St. Andrew’s Priory gym, 28-26, 25-22, 27-17.
» Sophomore Kim Spring had 12 kills and senior Crystal Powell added 11 to lead Chaminade (9-12, 6-10) over Notre Dame de Namur (5-20, 2-14), 25-12, 25-22, 25-23 at McCabe Gym.
