Hawaii men’s basketball coach Gib Arnold opens his season tonight with the promise of a multi-year extension of his contract, the Star-Advertiser has been told.
Arnold, who begins his fourth season, is one of at least four coaches whose extensions are in the works, some with what are termed "slight bumps" in pay.
Term sheets listing key provisions could go out for signature as soon as this month, officials confirmed.
Baseball coach Mike Trapasso and men’s volleyball coach Charlie Wade are among the others expected to receive extensions soon. They, like Arnold, are in the final year of their current contracts and have been telling prospective recruits of the pending extensions.
Proposals for extensions are subject to approval by the Manoa Chancellor’s Office and Board of Regents.
The contracts of more than a dozen coaches, including women’s basketball coach Laura Beeman, are said to be under review.
The contract of Arnold, who is 52-44 in three seasons and paid $344,000 per year, will expire June 30 without an extension. Athletic director Ben Jay said it was "important" to get Arnold’s contract taken care of with the Nov. 17 letter-of-intent day approaching.
The signing period for baseball is Nov. 13-20.
"We have to move forward on these coaches’ contracts for the sake of recruiting," Jay said.
Arnold’s current contract required that UH "engage in good faith negotiations for a new agreement" for a period of at least 60 days beginning July 1, 2013.
When the negotiating period began, Jay said he intended to have contract language and bonus provisions rewritten so as to make a template uniform for all coaches, beginning with Arnold.
The process has apparently been complicated by both lengthy negotiations with Arnold and additional layers of review in the wake of the "Wonder Blunder."
Arnold said he’d decline comment until a deal is reached.
