Garcia, Slater among invitees for Eddie Aikau big wave meet
Former world champions Sunny Garcia and Kelly Slater headline the list of surfers for the 29th Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau big wave invitational at Waimea Bay.
The holding period for the event begins on Dec. 1 and runs through Feb. 28. The opening ceremony with the Aikau family is at 3 p.m. Dec. 5 at Waimea Bay.
The big-wave invitational is a one-day event that requires waves in excess of 20 feet to run, and has been held eight times, the last in 2009. It honors Eddie Aikau, legendary surfer and Waimea Bay lifeguard who was lost at sea in 1978 when trying to paddle for help after the voyaging canoe Hokulei’a capsized in the Kaiwi Channel.
Named to the list of 28 are Aikau’s brother Clyde, Bruce Irons, Carlos Burle, Dave Wassel, Garrett McNamara, Grant Baker, Greg Long and Ian Walsh. Also, Jamie O’Brien, Jamie Sterling, Jeremy Flores, John John Florence, Kala Alexander, Kohl Christensen and Makua Rothman.
Other invitees are Mark Healey, Nathan Fletcher, Noah Johnson, Pete Mel, Reef McIntosh and Ramon Navarro. Also, Ross Clarke-Jones, Shane Dorian, Takayuki Wakita, Tom Carroll and newcomer Aaron Gold.
There are also 24 alternates.
