Cool weather sets record low temperatures this week

A cold streak was broken Thursday morning when no new low temperature records were set in Hawaii.

Record low temperatures were recorded in Honolulu, Lihue and Kahului airports on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The 64 degree temperature in Honolulu broke the old record of 65 for the date set in 1950. Lihue Airport recorded 61 degrees, tying a record also set on Nov. 13, 1950.

On Tuesday, Kahului’s 58 degree low temperature shattered the old record of 60 degrees set on Nov. 12, 1993. Lihue also set a record of 62 degrees, breaking the 1993 record of 63 degrees. Hilo also set a record low maximum temperature when the hottest it got was 74 degrees. The old maximum low of 77 degrees was set in 2001.

Forecasters say north winds and clear skies, which allow heat to escape, are the reasons it got so cold overnight.

The cloudy weather and the return of the trade winds should make for warmer nights through the weekend.
