It’s come full circle for Jasmine Mau, swimmer extraordinaire.
Mau was one of 29 high school seniors who signed letters of intent early Wednesday morning in a signing event hosted by Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance at the Elks Lodge in Waikiki.
The Punahou state champion and record-setter signed with California, with her parents and grandparents by her side. Outside the door: the swimming pool where she first learned to swim at age 3.
She’s developed quite a bit since.
Mau went on three official visits — to Cal, Texas and USC — in a two-week stretch, turning down two other visits.
"The first day of my recruiting trip, I walked out and met the team. I loved the relationships they have with each other and the coaches. I just knew I wanted to be there for the next four years," she said.
Mau is ranked No. 3 among current seniors nationally in the 100-yard butterfly. At Cal, she could be a factor in that event and the medley relay as a freshman. For now, she’s in the midst of the usual regimen of training for elite swimmers: early morning (6 a.m.) workouts three times a week, along with afternoon training six days per week.
At the signing event, eight volleyball players and eight baseball players sealed their college plans.
The volleyball signees included UH recruit Savanah Kahakai of Farrington and Alohi Robins-Hardy of Kamehameha. Robins-Hardy will play volleyball and basketball at BYU.
"Signing feels great. I’m definitely relieved about trying decide what school," she said. "I chose BYU because they gave me the best (financial) package to play both."
Playing both sports at the collegiate level was a must for the 6-foot-1 senior. Hawaii recruited her for basketball only.
All eight baseball signees at the event are going away to play. Saint Louis pitcher Jordan Yamamoto signed with his dream school, Arizona. Punahou ace Dylan Combs wore his crimson Harvard cap, while teammates Beau Branton (Stanford) and K.J. Harrison (Oregon State) wore their new colors. Including ‘Iolani’s Christian Donahue, Oregon State scooped three local prospects today.
Waipahu ace Dylan Sugimoto inked his paperwork to play for San Jose State.
At Kamehameha-Hawaii, boys volleyball standout Evan Enriques, the 2012 All-State player of the year, signed with Stanford.
