Hikers rescued after injuries on Maui trails
Maui fire crews aided a pair of hikers in separate incidents over the weekend.
On Sunday, firefighters airlifted a 56-year-old woman from Ohio who was injured while hiking at Puu Olai near Makena Beach.
The woman sustained minor injuries to her hip and leg in a fall and also complained of exhaustion, according a Fire Department report. She declined transport to a hospital.
Early Saturday evening a dozen firefighters from Wailuku and Kahului carried an injured hiker to safety after he found himself stranded in a treacherous area 25 feet below a scenic lookout.
According to a Fire Department report, the hiker, a 63-year-old man, suffered rib and back injuries after he fell 20 to 30 feet off the Pali lookout trail. Firefighters provided first aid then secured the man in a basket and carried him off the trail.
Battalion Chief Val Martin called the rescue a "tough extraction" due to the rocky terrain. The hiker was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
