Rep. Mizuno’s family ‘alive but starving’
All of state Rep. John Mizuno’s family members, who had been missing after Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines, are alive and accounted for, the lawmaker said Monday.
Mizuno’s wife, May Besario Mizuno, was contacted by her sister-in-law in Leyte, who told her family members are "alive but starving." They are in Barugo, a town 30 miles from Tacloban City.
No aid is reaching their town, she said.
May Mizuno said, "Our immediate plans are to assist them in traveling, probably by boat," to Negros Oriental to be with other family members.
Cabanilla fined for false spending report
State Rep. Rida Cabanilla has been fined $500 by the state Campaign Spending Commission for filing an inaccurate or false campaign finance report.
Cabanilla held a fundraiser in March but reported raising no money when she filed her report for the first half of the year. She subsequently reported raising $5,830.
Cabanilla was named House majority floor leader in October after Rep. Karen Awana resigned the leadership post after facing campaign finance violations.
The Campaign Spending Commission imposed the fine at its meeting Wednesday.
Driver in fatal tanker crash was Hilo man
Hawaii County police identified the 41-year-old man who died Friday in a fuel tanker crash in South Kohala as Amos K. Agliam of Hilo.
Agliam died at the scene. An autopsy has been ordered to determine cause of death.
Police said Agliam was driving a 2003 Kenworth tractor pulling a tanker-trailer, which was loaded with 8,402 gallons of diesel fuel.
He was traveling west down a steep grade on Highway 19 near the 64-mile marker when the truck ran off the right paved shoulder, continued onto the unpaved shoulder and collided with a large mound of dirt and debris.
The trailer broke loose, crushing the cab and rolling onto its right side.
The tanker was punctured, spilling between 1,500 and 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel.
This was Hawaii island’s 24th traffic fatality this year, compared with 36 at this time last year.
