Missing money threatens youth football team trip
HILO >> A Hilo youth football team’s trip to Florida next month is in jeopardy as police investigate money missing from league coffers.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports more than $100,000 may be missing from a travel fund that was to pay for the Panaewa Alii midget team to go to the Pop Warner Super Bowl.
The team defeated Maui’s Wailuku Rainbows 30-8 on Saturday in Hilo.
Deputy prosecutor Kauanoe Jackson says police and prosecutors are in the preliminary stages of the criminal process.
Big Island Pop Warner Football Conference secretary Brenda Kuamoo says the team is scrambling to raise money for the trip.
Conference President William “Bo” Waite says it would cost about $2,000 per person for airfare, hotel and other travel expenses of players and chaperones.
