Vulcans win basketball home opener
Behind Jamario Clayton’s team-high 16 points, Hawaii Hilo ran past Western State College of Colorado 88-62 on Wednesday in its men’s basketball home opener in Hilo.
Darnell Williams added 14 points, while Jeff Perkins pitched in with 12 points for the Vulcans (2-1).
WSCC dropped to 0-3.
Hawaii Hilo travels to Oahu for a nonconference game against Hawaii (2-2) tonight at 7 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Prep champs gain USTA doubles titles
A trio of state high school tennis champions collected titles over the weekend in the USTA Junior Doubles Championships at the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park Tennis Complex.
A field of 18 boys and eight girls teams competed, with the winning teams getting a trip to the finals weekend of the 2014 Royal Lahaina Challenger.
Mililani’s Alyssa Tobita teamed with Kekaha’s Lani Rae Green to win the girls championship, 6-4, 6-1 over Kapolei’s Skyla Alcon and Aiea’s Sari Kwee. Honolulu’s Kawika Lam and Zander Kim took the boys title with three straight-set wins in a round-robin format.
Tobita also finished third in the Creative Energy Women’s Night Doubles on Saturday, with Katie Kim. That open event was her fifth match of the day. Tobita has won the past three state high school singles titles.
Lam is the reigning boys singles champ and won doubles with Kim in 2012.
Team USA falls to Brazil in volleyball
Team USA held a set point in the first set and led 23-22 in the last two, but couldn’t convert against top-ranked Brazil Wednesday. The U.S. fell 31-29, 25-23, 25-23 at the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in Kyoto, Japan.
The U.S., ranked fourth in the world, dropped to 1-1 and plays third-ranked Italy (1-1) today.
Hawaii’s Erik Shoji (four digs) and Micah Christenson (22 assists, 10 digs) started for the U.S. Kawika Shoji had one ace as a serving substitute. The U.S., which missed 22 serves in its win over Japan on Tuesday, added another 16 against Brazil.
