Former Hawaii television newscaster and restaurant reviewer Lyle Galdeira died early Monday morning. He was 59.

Galdeira, a 1973 graduate of Punahou, started his news career at a radio station in Portland after graduating from Pacific University in Oregon. He later moved back to Hawaii where he started working at KITV News in the late 1980s.

He was part of the team that helped to launch Hawaii News 8 and later served as a food reviewer with Russell Yamanoha on a popular restaurant review program known as "Cheap Eats."

For the past several years, Galdeira worked as a real estate agent at Prudential Real Estate.

Kyle Galdeira said his father awoke a little after midnight complaining of difficulty breathing, and an ambulance was called.

Emergency Medical Services personnel tried to revive him, but he eventually slipped into unconsciousness and died, Kyle Galdeira said.
