The Sheraton Hawaii Bowl might not have its matchup set until Dec. 7, executive director David Matlin said.
The Hawaii Bowl pairs representatives from the Mountain West and Conference USA in a nationally televised Dec. 24 game at Aloha Stadium.
Both conferences have championship games on Dec. 7.
Five MWC teams — Fresno State (10-0), San Diego State (7-4), Utah State (7-4), Boise State (7-4) and Nevada-Las Vegas (6-5) — are already bowl eligible and three others — Colorado State (6-6), San Jose State (5-6) and Wyoming (5-6) — have the potential to become bowl eligible.
The MWC bowl picture is complicated by questions about whether Fresno State will qualify for a Bowl Championship Series appearance. If not, the conference could have more bowl-eligible teams than postseason affiliations.
Matlin said about a half dozen MWC teams have contacted the game about the possibility of appearing in the Hawaii Bowl.
"We’re definitely hearing from the teams and some people who are affiliated with the teams," Matlin said.
