Hawaii redoubled its efforts on Day 2 of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown.
Laura Beeman’s team compensated for a lack of motivation in the round-robin tournament opener against Colorado State on Friday by outworking Tennessee-Chattanooga for a 60-55 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Senior forward Kamilah Jackson had the game-sealing three-point play on a dump-off pass from Shawna Kuehu in the paint with 22.7 seconds left, putting UH (4-3) up by five points on the Mocs (4-3), who had no rebuttal before an enthused gathering of 368.
"It just wasn’t there (Friday). No energy, no effort," said Jackson, whose 17 points and 11 rebounds represented her fifth straight double-double. "But I think we definitely fixed that today and had each other’s backs. We were hitting shots. I think everything was going right for us today."
Jackson shot just 7-for-20 against a beefy Mocs front line but still moved past Kylie (Page) Galloway for fifth on the UH career scoring list at 1,325 points. Galloway finished with 1,317. Jackson added a season-high five assists.
Junior wing Ashleigh Karaitiana contributed her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore utility player Destiny King responded to her first start of the season with 11 points and three assists, including an on-target fullcourt heave to Jackson for a second-half layup.
It was easy to pinpoint several examples of all-out plays by the Wahine — and they needed them all against the defending Southern Conference champions, who went 29-4 last season. UH led by 15 points in the first half and 12 in the second, and the Mocs came back both times, despite shooting just 28.8 percent and getting outrebounded 44-39 by UH.
Kuehu came up clutch at the line, going 4-for-4, scored eight points and had five rebounds and three assists.
In one sequence, Kuehu swatted a shot by Chattanooga’s best player, Taylor Hall, out of bounds. Then UH forced a five-second inbounds violation. Hall had 12 points and 16 rebounds.
On another play, King ran back to intercept Chelsey Shumpert on a fast-break attempt, blocking and deflecting it off the Chattanooga guard back to UH.
"It was really important for us to come back with effort and focus," Beeman said. "It was kind of a commitment with this program, what we’re trying to do. I don’t feel like we did that yesterday. We had no focus and it showed in everything we did yesterday.
"I wanted to see effort today, win or lose."
UH faces a tough task in the tournament finale at 5 p.m. today against Minnesota (7-1). The Big Ten’s Golden Gophers dispatched Colorado State and Chattanooga over the past two days, including a 79-55 win over the Rams on Saturday.
"We’re outsized and overmatched again. I mean, we really are," Beeman said. "They have a 6-5 post player (Amanda Zahui). … They have guards who can shoot lights-out. Their off guard (Rachel Banham) put up 36 and 25, so it’s not like we can double down on the post. It’s going to come down to doing your job individually and knowing we have rotations behind you."
