STOCKING STUFFER
If your budget is petite, Sephora has a Beauty to Go bar en route to the cashier that’s packed with travel-size goodies; many are mini versions of the store’s top sellers, such as Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in party-ready, deep-red Icon for $10. And you can always break up higher-priced sets, such as the Sephora Collection Color Wand Lip Gloss Trio, $16. Each wand features four colors; dividing the pack among three teens brings the price down to $5.30 each. Even better, the Sephora Collection Mini Glitter Liner Set features five wands for $16, or $3.20 each when divided among five friends.

Explore the magical realm of mermaids with Mitsuko Hayakawa’s Wee Wonders dolls. Each is handmade from organic cotton and stuffed with wool. The mermaids’ simple expressions are meant to spur a child’s imagination. The 13-inch mermaid is $50, and the 6-inch doll is $28 at Tini Manini, a children’s boutique in the North Shore Marketplace, 66-250 Kamehameha Highway in Haleiwa.

My go-to for grown-up refreshment is Fujioka’s Wine Times at Market City Shopping Center, 2919 Kapiolani Blvd. Not only is it conveniently located with plenty of parking, but the selection is diverse and prices are consistently competitive with other local retailers. Another benefit of shopping at Fujioka’s Market City is store manager Jason Fukeda. Looking for a specific bottle? He can help you find it. No idea what you’re looking for? Even better, since Fukeda is a trained professional who can steer you toward your new favorite spirit.
Fukeda is a big fan of Scotch whisky, picking out Bruichladdich’s Port Charlotte PC7 ($93.99) for experienced drinkers and The Laddie Ten ($52.99) for newbies who don’t enjoy the smoke and earth flavors of a more heavily peated whisky. The more affordable price of The Laddie Ten means you could also pick up a couple of cigars, too. My pick is Glenmorangie 18 ($85.99) or Glenlivet 18 ($75.99) for something a little flashy with a nice box that still tastes really good. More affordable options include the easy-drinking Four Roses Single Barrel ($44.99) or The Balvenie Doublewood 12 ($52.99).
Call 739-9463 or follow the store on Facebook (facebook.com/FujiokasWineTimes) for information on special tasting events.

Earlier this year, we told you about Pam Aqui of Kailua, who was asked by the White House to make a rosary for Pope Francis. Aqui created an elegant string of koa beads adorned with a silver cross and center. She’s not making exact replicas of that rosary, but she sells other designs starting at $40 up to $400 and more, or you can place a custom order. Visit heirloomrosaries.com, where you can also order a koa box for your rosary crafted by Matt Medeiros, who made one for Aqui’s papal gift.

GIFTS THAT GIVE
A $60 gift of a Koa Legacy Tree from Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods on Hawaii island gives back in many ways. It supports reforestation efforts of native koa, which in turn restores the diversity of the ecosystem. The company donates $20 of the amount to a charity of your choice, with $1 donated to the Hawaiian Islands Land Trust. Remaining funds go to collecting seeds by hand, raising a seedling and planting your tree on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Recipients receive a certificate and can track the growth of their radio-tagged tree via GPS/GIS mapping. Call 877-707-8733 or visit www.legacytrees.org.
