Free event at Capitol will teach about kalo
Learn about the diverse roles kalo plays in Hawaii, agriculturally, economically and culturally, 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the Capitol Rotunda.
Farmers, entrepreneurs and educational and cultural organizations will present taro products, information on agricultural tourism, research and more.
The free event is presented by the Taro Security and Purity Task Force, a 16-member panel comprising taro farmers, state officials, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture.

Benefit dinner to mark Slow Food’s 20 years
Slow Food O‘ahu is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Slow Food movement with a "Pa‘i‘ai & Friends Dinner" Tuesday at town restaurant.
The menu will celebrate local food such as Hanapepe red salt, kalo, ulu, opihi and hua moa bananas. The six-course dinner features Yaki Pa‘i‘ai with Kukui Nut Broth; salad of opelu, pohole, pickled persimmon and poi croutons; Risotto Lu‘au, with grilled he‘e and coconut milk; venison pipikaula and "super sour" poi; and browned butter kulolo, banana and kiawe bean molasses.
The dinner, benefiting Slow Food O‘ahu, starts at 6 p.m.; silent auction is at 5:30 p.m. Seats are $105, which includes wine and beer. For reservations, visit goo.gl/qwtQLW.
Food festival raises $228,500
This year’s Hawaii Food & Wine Festival raised $228,500 for 10 charities.
The 17 events, attended by more than 5,000 people, brought to Hawaii more than 75 chefs, 50 farmers, 20 winemakers, 10 mixologists, a sake brewer and a brewmaster.
Recipients: Culinary Institute of the Pacific ($80,000), Hawai‘i Agricultural Foundation ($70,000), Maui County Farm Bureau ($20,000), Leeward Community College Culinary Arts Program ($20,000), Paepae o He‘eia ($10,000), Papahana Kuaola ($10,000), Hawaii Culinary Education Foundation ($7,500), Maui Culinary Academy ($5,000), Hawaii Seafood Council ($5,000) and The Ocean Institute ($1,000) in memory of Rick Hadley.
