UH to celebrate late player’s life Monday
The University of Hawaii football program is hosting a "celebration of life" ceremony for Jack Willis Wilson III on Monday in the Stan Sheriff Center.
The service, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is open to the public.
Wilson — known as Willis Wilson to the public and "Willy Will" or "Cudi Man" to friends and teammates — died this past Saturday morning of an apparent drowning. Wilson, a walk-on running back, was 21. He was born in Pearl City, and raised in Washington. His father, Jack Wilson, is a former UH football player.
Rainbow Warrior players and running back coach Chris Wiesehan are among the scheduled speakers.
Sakamoto, Jang seek LPGA player cards
Kalani graduate Nicole Sakamoto fired a 2-under-par 70 in Thursday’s second round of the final LPGA Qualifying Tournament, moving into a tie for 43rd. Sakamoto, who has won the past four Hawaii Stroke Play titles, is at even-par 144 at LPGA International, in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Punahou graduate Anna Jang shot 75–147 and dropped into a share of 80th. Australian Corie Hou, who played for the University of Hawaii, also shot 75 and is at 149.
The top 20 after Sunday’s fifth round earn exempt LPGA Tour cards. Those who finish 21st-45th get non-exempt status. All those who make the 72-hole cut Saturday (low 70 and ties) earn Symetra Tour status in 2014.
Jaye Marie Green, who shot 62 Wednesday, has a five-shot lead in the 153-player field at 130.
