Whyte wins world kitesurf title
Hawaii’s Moona Whyte successfully defended her world title by defeating Jalou Langeree of the Netherlands in the women’s final of last week’s Cabrinha Kite Surf Pro Maui off Ho’okipa.
Hawaii’s Skylar Lickle and Kaila Aguerra finished equal fifth.
On the men’s side, Keahi DeAboitiz of Australia narrowly defeated Maui’s Kai Lenny in a final in which the outcome was not known until the awards ceremony. It capped a remarkable year for Lenny, who also won world titles in stand-up paddleboard wave and race en route to the overall SUP world championship.
Hawaii’s Cruser Putnam finished equal fifth, and Sky Solbach and Patri McLaughlin equal ninth. Jesse Richmand and Devin Moody of Hawaii were among those finishing equal 17th.
In the Xensr Big Air Invitational that followed, Hawaii competitors dominated with Jon McCabe winning over Jesse Richman and Charles Edwards finishing third out of the 12 invited kite surfers.
Langeree won the women’s invitational followed by Brazil’s Raquel Lima and Lickle.
In the Kama’aina Throwdown, Rafal Malezyk took top spot in the men’s division over Garfield King and Wes Anderson. In the women’s division Lickle won over Michelle Crompton and Tatiana How.
Haitsuka scores in rugby debut
Hawaii’s Kupono Haitsuka made a successful international debut with the USA Eagles 7s national rugby team last weekend, scoring in the 19-14 semifinal loss to France in the Emirates Dubai Rugby 7s Shield tournament.
Haitsuka’s try helped the U.S. to a 14-0 halftime lead against France. The Kamehameha Schools graduate, an honorable mention USAR Collegiate All-American at Oregon State, was named to the roster the week before.
Caravalho wins bodybuilding
Honolulu’s Anne-Marie Caravalho won the Bikini D Division of last month’s NPC National Bodybuilding Championships held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Caravalho earned her pro card with the win. She also was the runner-up in the NPC Emerald Cup last year and 12th at the NPC Junior Nationals earlier this year.
Pipeline Masters starting
The holding period for the Billabong Pipe Masters in memory of Andy Irons, the third and final event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, starts Sunday and runs through Dec. 20 at the Banzai Pipeline.
Among those entered are Australia’s Mick Fanning and California’s Kelly Slater, ranked 1-2 in the current ASP World Championship Tour standings heading into this final event. Currently no Hawaii surfer is in the top 10. John John Florence is at No. 13, Sebastian Zietz No. 17 and Fred Patacchia No. 19.
BMX speed clinic Saturday
Pro rider Tyler Brown is offering a speed clinic Saturday at the Sandbox BMX Track on Sand Island. The clinic begins at 1 p.m. Registration is at 12:40 p.m. with a cost of $35. The final Sandbox BMX race of the year follows at 4 p.m.
Workshop for senior bicyclists
The Hawaii Bicycling League is offering a free workshop for seniors ages 55 and over Saturday at Blaisdell Park in Aiea. The workshop runs from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Recumbent tricycles will be provided.
AccesSurf beach day Saturday
AccesSurf’s monthly "Day at the Beach" is Saturday at White Plains Beach Park. The program offers adaptive surfing, shoreline flotation and swimming for any person with a disability. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
