Sakamoto misses cut at LPGA qualifier
Hawaii’s Nicole Sakamoto came up a shot short Saturday, missing the 72-hole cut at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament at LPGA International, in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Sakamoto, a Kalani graduate, fired a 3-over-par 75 and had a four-day total of 292. The cut came at 3-over 291.
Punahou graduate Anna Jang also missed the cut, finishing at 78–301 with former Princeton teammate Kelly Shon. Former Rainbow Wahine Corie Hou, from Australia, shot 71–299.
Jaye Marie Green, a 19-year-old from Florida, has a nine-shot lead heading into today’s final round, at 25-under-263.
Today’s top 20 earn exempt spots on the 2014 LPGA Tour, and an aggregate, three-hole playoff will be held to determine the 20th spot, if needed. The next 25 finishers and ties earn conditional status for 2014 and the other 25 who made the cut get status on the 2014 Symetra Tour.
UH men’s volleyball season tickets on sale
Season tickets for the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball season go on sale Monday, available online, at the Stan Sheriff Center box office or by calling 944-2697.
Prices are $40 for students age 4 through high school, $85 for seniors 65 and older and $125 and up for everyone else.
Hawaii opens its season Jan. 2 and 4, hosting Thompson Rivers, followed by the Outrigger Invitational on Jan. 9-11, which also includes UCLA, Penn State and Ohio State.
UH Hilo routs BYUH in women’s basketball
Kirstie Williams had a team-high 13 points as 12 players scored in leading Hawaii Hilo to an 80-53 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii in a Pacific West Conference women’s basketball game Saturday in Hilo.
The Vulcans improved to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the PacWest, while BYUH is 0-6 and 0-1.
