During December many Las Vegas shows go "dark" to allow cast members to take extended holiday vacations. If you’re visiting between now and New Year’s and have your heart set on seeing a show, make sure to check that there will be performances during your dates.

Thrice the ice: This year Las Vegas boasts three skating rinks on the Strip. Fronting the Venetian is a rink made of synthetic "Ven-ice," which doesn’t require refrigeration. The skating surface is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, and the fee to skate is $10-$15 for one hour. The rink at the Cosmopolitan is made of real ice and overlooks the Strip. It’s $15 for all-day access. The third is a real-ice surface at Caesars Palace that’s about to open; no fee has been announced.

More holidays: Other places to look for holiday displays and events are Sam’s Town (a decked-out atrium and Santa), Bellagio (conservatory) and Silverton (Underwater Santa), along with the noncasino Fremont Street Experience and Fashion Show Mall.

ANSWER: Yes. In a check of 93 hotel-casinos late last month, 87 had rooms available. The lowest-priced room for New Year’s Eve was at the Lucky Club ($90), and other good deals were found at Texas Station and Fiesta Rancho (each $110). The most expensive rooms were at Nobu inside Caesars Palace, two nights (the minimum) for $1,538.
