Leeward school bans kendama over gambling concerns

The highly popular Japanese wooden toy kendama has been banned by one Oahu school because it can be used for gambling.

Kendamas will no longer be allowed on campus, according to the James Campbell High School in Ewa, because it is being used for gambling purposes, which is a Chapter 19 offense.

A similar ban is in effect at Keoneula Elementary School in Ewa Beach.

Both schools said kendamas will be considered a contraband item and will be confiscated.

A kendama is a traditional Japanese wooden toy consisting of a wooden ball connected by a string to a base with cups.
