Motorcyclist dies after hitting parked car
A 25-year-old Pearl City man died early Friday morning after he lost control of his motorcycle and struck a parked car in Aiea. He was identified as James Stayton.
Police said the accident occurred at 1:05 a.m. on Kaahumanu Street near Komo Mai Drive.
The motorcyclist was traveling north on Kaahumanu Street on a blue 2007 Yamaha motorcycle when he struck a parked blue 2012 Honda Civic sedan. The Honda was unoccupied, police said. Speed may have been a factor in the accident, police said.
The driver was taken in critical condition to Pali Momi Medical Center where he died. This was Oahu’s 53rd traffic death of 2013, compared with 57 at the same time last year.
Arrestee allegedly assaults officer
A Nuuanu man, 23, is in custody after he allegedly assaulted a police officer Friday morning while he was being arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Police said the suspect was stopped at Kapiolani Boulevard and Pensacola Street at 3:37 a.m. for a traffic violation. During the arrest, the suspect allegedly assaulted the police officer. Both the suspect and the police officer sustained minor injuries.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and drunken driving.
Fires damage homes in Makiki, Wahiawa
A fire that damaged a Makiki apartment Thursday night is believed to have been intentionally set, according to fire officials.
Also, fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a blaze that damaged a home in Wahiawa early Friday morning.
No one was injured by either fire.
The first alarm was reported at 9:46 p.m. Thursday at a six-story building on Hassinger Street in Makiki. Damage was estimated at $1,000 to the building and $100 to contents of the sixth-floor apartment where the tenants were in the process of moving out, said Capt. Tyler Chan, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.
The other fire was reported at 5:57 a.m. Friday at a Leilehua Road home in Wahiawa. The fire was put out by 7 a.m.
Damage was estimated at $50,000 to the single-family structure and $20,000 to its contents. The fire was contained to one bedroom and a hallway, Chan said.
