A thunder storm dampened television coverage and attendance at the outdoor Kokua for the Philippines benefit concert, but a shortened show went on and still raised nearly $1.76 million for victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
The live television broadcast of the concert was canceled because the outdoor venue on the Great Lawn of the Hilton Hawaiian Village was rained out by a thunder storm.
But organizers moved the concert indoors and broadcasted on radio and the Internet with KSSK morning radio hosts Michael W. Perry and Larry Price.
Not all of the scheduled acts were able to perform, but several did and major Hawaii companies and corporations made good on pre-planned pledges.
By the time the broadcast went off the air just after 4:30 p.m., organizers said they raised $1,758,386.42. Phone lines were still collecting donations until 6 p.m. Sunday.
Those who bought $20 seats for the outdoor concert were encouraged to make their ticket purchase a donation. However, refunds will be provided for those who request, organizers said.
Performers appearing on shortened event included: Henry Kapono, Mick Fleetwood, Kristian Lei, Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom, a special appearance by Jimmy Buffett with Jake Shimabukuro, Brother Noland, Aidan James, Clifford Naeole, Kealoha, Kalei Gamiao, EMKE, AJ Rafael, and Marco Lopez.
The event was supposed to start at noon, but organizers said began broadcasting live on radio and the Internet by about 1 p.m.
Proceeds from phone bank and on-site gifts will be donated to the American Red Cross for disaster relief.
