Let the sun shine … and energize Kalaeloa
Three cheers — or maybe five cheers, one for each megawatt — for the launch of the new solar park with the capacity to serve 1,000 homes in Kalaeloa. Redeveloping the former Barbers Point Naval Air station is complicated by various factors, but one has been the replacement of the Navy-run power utility. And although the solar power generators, linked to the Hawaiian Electric Co. grid by a 46-volt line, will help with the residential projects planned by Hunt Cos., there’s lots more to do.
Additional sources of power, and connections to the grid, will be needed for more growth in the "downtown" area, envisioned as a mixed-use zone. Stay plugged in for further developments.
Delta gives sound reason to select it for flying
Kudos to Delta Airlines for stating that even if the Federal Communications Commission lifts a long-time ban on in-flight phone calls, it will exercise its prerogative to continue preventing passengers from such use. It cited employee and customer surveys that were largely unfavorable to the idea of passengers chatting away during trips. Delta did say, reasonably, that silent phone uses like e-mail and texting would be OK.
Though they don’t fly here, JetBlue, Southwest and Virgin America also are saying that they aren’t inclined to allow in-flight calls. Let’s hope many others follow suit to keep our friendly skies friendly — and yakkity-yak-free.
