Lifeguards helped stop a would-be thief in Waikiki on Christmas Eve, police said.

A beachgoer witnessed a 42-year-old homeless man rummaging through a bag on the beach around 2 p.m. before he fled with it, according to police documents.

Lifeguards detained the man until police arrived, police said.

Police arrested the man at 3:20 p.m. on Kalia Road near Fort Derussy Beach Park on suspicion of second-degree theft.

All of the items in the bag he allegedly took off with were recovered at the scene.
