Oahu road-paving a welcome sight
For long-suffering motorists bouncing along damaged roads, some words of encouragement: The city says it has repaired a record 392 lane-miles of city roads in 2013, on its way to the mayor’s goal of 1,520 lane-miles in five years.
Of course, if you live in a neighborhood where the roads remain degraded, or if you’re dodging bumps and holes on state thoroughfares like the Pali Highway, such cheery news may be cold comfort.
And with more than a million vehicles on Oahu, fixing our roads will be never-ending.
Still, a road-paving crew is a welcome sight — our tax dollars at work.
Soccer stars will shine on isle kids
Soccer is played by thousands of kids in Hawaii, so it’s kind of a big deal that six-time MLS All-Star (and Kamehameha Schools graduate) Brian Ching will be on island to headline this weekend’s ProXtreme Soccer Camp at Waialae Iki Park.
Ching has had a stellar career in professional soccer, and on Monday was named managing director of the Houston Dash, the newest team in the National Women’s Soccer League. Any kids attending the soccer camp will likely get some serious inside scoop about what the sport might be able to offer them, besides just fun.
Other famous soccer players on hand will include Eric Wynalda, Clint Mathis, Tracey Winzen Mathis, Yuki Ogimi and Dwayne De Rosario. If you don’t know who they all are, you haven’t been paying attention.
The soccer camp isn’t free, but for those attending, it could be money well spent. Check out hawaiisoccercamps.com.
