Sailboat with broken mast found adrift
The Coast Guard is asking for the public’s help finding the owner of a small sailboat found dismasted and adrift about 7 miles south of Pearl Harbor.
The passenger vessels Sashimi I and Reel Intent found the small white and blue vessel with a broken red mast on Saturday.
A 25-foot Coast Guard boat investigated and recovered the vessel.
No one has been reported missing or in distress in the area, so the Coast Guard is not actively searching for anyone.
The hull number is associated with the previous owner, and the new owner has not registered it, the Coast Guard said. Also, the previous owner does not have any contact information for the new owner.
Anyone with information on the boat is asked to contact the Coast Guard Honolulu Command Center at 842-2600.
Sun and muggy weather to greet new year
Winds are changing and should become southerly on Wednesday, but forecasters still expect mostly sunny skies on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
The weather service canceled a flood advisory Sunday prompted by afternoon rain and thunderstorms on windward slopes on Hawaii island.
The rest of the islands enjoyed moderate tradewinds, with a few of the usual windward and mauka showers.
The winds should turn more easterly today, weaken on Tuesday and turn southerly sometime on New Year’s Day, forecaster said.
Muggy Kona weather, accompanying the southerly winds, is likely to stick around through Friday and Oahu could experience vog on Thursday, as well as some afternoon showers, forecasters said.
A weather system moving toward Hawaii from the northwest is forecast to move over the state during the weekend, bringing a greater chance of showers to all islands.
