Teen is charged in man’s death

Police charged a 16-year-old Palolo boy with manslaughter Monday night in the beating death of a 62-year-old homeless man in the McCully area Friday morning.

The victim, Anthony Montero, also known as Paul A. Manner, identified himself as a freelance journalist and also ran unsuccessfully for political office.

Police arrested the teenager Monday morning in Palolo on suspicion of second-degree murder. His name and age were not released because he is a minor.

No other suspects are being sought, Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman Teresa Bell said.

Montero was reportedly attacked by a group of teenagers near the corner of South King and Punahou streets, where he slept early Friday morning.

As Manner, Montero ran for U.S. Senate in 1998 and 2000, Honolulu mayor in 2004, governor in 2006 and 2010, and U.S. Senate again in 2012.
