Rodeo to benefit Make-a-Wish Foundation
A Rope-for-Wishes Rodeo will be held Saturday at Kualoa Ranch with events including team roping, break-away roping, wild steer riding and wahine steer undecorating, a female version of steer wrestling.
The rodeo, a benefit for the Make-a-Wish-Foundation, opens at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $5, with free admission for children younger than 8. Call Kathy Rita at 312-9249 or email krteam4rita@yahoo.com.
Drifting kayak is reunited with its owner
The owner of a red kayak that had been found adrift Wednesday one mile south off Maunalua Bay called the Coast Guard on Thursday to claim it.
The Coast Guard had recovered the unmanned kayak Wednesday and asked for the public’s help in finding the vessel’s owner. A Coast Guard spokeswoman said the owner said the kayak had come untied and floated off.
Kauai hearings to cover Council reorganization
Public meetings will be held this month on a proposal to establish seven geographic districts for the Kauai County Council.
The Council’s seven members are now elected at-large to represent the entire island. Under the proposal, members would be elected based on the district in which they live.
A subcommittee of the Charter Review Commission has scheduled meetings for Thursday at Kapaa Neighborhood Center, Jan. 13 at Church of the Pacific in Prince-ville and Jan. 16 at Waimea Neighborhood Center.
Legislative priorities topic of Maui session
State Rep. Justin Woodson and the state House leadership will hold a community meeting on Maui tonight to discuss the upcoming legislative session and to hear feedback on issues from constituents.
Joining Woodson (D, Kahului-Wailuku-Puunene) will be House Speaker Joseph Souki, Vice Speaker John Mizuno and Majority Leader Scott Saiki, as well as committee leaders Sylvia Luke (Finance), Karl Rhoads (Judiciary), Mele Carroll (Human Services), Cindy Evans (Water and Land), Della Au Belatti (Health, Energy), Chris Lee (Environmental Protection) and Mark Nakashima (Labor and Public Employment).
The meeting will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Pomaikai Elementary School cafeteria, 4650 S. Kamehameha Ave., Kahului.
