Sea Warriors upset Red Storm
Justin Long scored 26 points and Farbod Farman added 17 points and 16 rebounds to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 96-77 victory over seventh-ranked and previously unbeaten Dixie State at Blaisdell Arena on Monday night.
Malte Ziegenhagen added 20 points, hitting four of the team’s 10 3-pointers for the Sea Warriors (9-2, 4-1).
Zach Robbins led the Red Storm (11-1, 5-1) with 22 points and Kimball Payne added 15.
» Brigham Young-Hawaii rebounded from a slow start to defeat Academy of Art 87-74 at Cannon Activities Center.
Pablo Coro scored 19 points off the bench to lead the Seasiders (5-5, 3-1). Jordan Ngatai added 16 points and six boards.
» Point Loma (Calif.) downed host Hawaii Hilo 87-73. Yevgenly Dyachenko led the Vulcans (3-10, 0-7) with 14 points.
» Chaminade went on a 16-0 second-half run en route to a 75-65 win over Dominican at McCabe Gym. Kuany Kuany posted 20 points and 10 rebounds to notch his fourth double-double of the season for the Silverswords (6-6, 3-1).
Weekly honors to Farman and Kuany
Hawaii Pacific senior center Farbod Farman and Chaminade freshman guard Kuany Kuany were honored by the conference for their performances last week.
Farman was named the defensive player of the week after averaging 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 2.0 steals as the Sea Warriors went 2-0 with wins over British Columbia and Academy of Art. He had eight points and four blocks against the Urban Knights.
Kuany earned weekly freshman honors for the second straight week with 18 points and nine rebounds in the Silverswords’ 87-86 loss to Dixie State.
WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Lee Bailey, CU: had a game-high 27 points, going 10-for-19 from the floor, in the Silverswords’ near-upset of the seventh-ranked Red Storm.
Justin Long, HPU: The junior guard averaged 27 points in HPU’s two wins last week, including 35 points and five 3-pointers against British Columbia.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Williams, Vulcans top Crusaders
Kirstie Williams came off the bench for 25 points, including seven 3-pointers, to lead Hawaii Hilo to an 84-67 victory Monday night at the UHH gym.
Kamie Imai added 15 points and McKenzie Mangino and Danielle Kooyman each had 12 for the Vulcans (5-6, 5-3), who made 10 of their 24 3-point attempts.
The Crusaders (7-5, 4-3) were led by Callie Rhoads’ 14 points.
» Haley Holmstead scored 29 points and Dixie State outscored Hawaii Pacific 24-13 in the final eight minutes to pull out an 88-84 win at Blaisdell Arena.
Skye Savini scored 19 points and Laken McClelland 16 for the Sea Warriors (7-4 3-2), who had taken a 71-64 lead with 8:29 to go on Brittany Hale’s 3-pointer. Brianna White added 23 points for the Red Storm (6-6, 4-2).
» Kennedi Akana tied her career high with 16 points and Kristle Henry added 14, but it was not enough as Chaminade dropped a 79-61 contest to Dominican at McCabe Gym.
Solonika Quewon-Owens and Carly Holboke each had 19 points for the Penguins (1-12, 1-6) against the Silverswords (1-9, 1-3).
» Academy of Art used an early 16-2 run to pull away from Brigham Young-Hawaii en route to a 101-47 victory at Cannon Activities Center.
Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo, Jashan Cui and Uluakimata ta Tonga all had nine points for the Seasiders (0-9, 0-4).
Krystal Fortham came off the bench for 20 points, one of six Urban Knights in double figures. Defending conference champ Academy of Art improved to 9-4 and 6-0.

Morganne Comstock, HPU: The junior center and last week’s player of the week had 14 points and 14 rebounds in the Sea Warriors’ loss to Academy of Art.
Kamie Imai, UHH: The senior swing player out of Waiakea averaged 17 points as the Vulcans went 1-1 last week, including 19 points in the win over Dominican.

Silverswords hire Kingsley as men’s coach
Former Major League Soccer player Zach Kingsley has been hired as Chaminade’s new men’s soccer head coach.
Kingsley, who played collegiately at the University of Washington, spent last fall as a graduate assistant for the Hawaii Pacific women’s team. He helped the Huskies to three Pac-10 titles and was a second-round draft pick for the Seattle Sounders in 2002.
The Washington state native was traded to the Colorado Rapids in the middle of his rookie season and played for the Rapids from 2002 to ’07.
CONFERENCE
New media relations director named
Jimmy Knodel has been named the director of strategic positioning/media relations, a newly created full-time position for the conference.
He replaces Tom DiCamillo, who served as assistant commissioner/media relations in a part-time capacity since 2006.
Knodel, an Ithaca College graduate, has worked for Illinois State, Syracuse, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Baltimore Orioles.
