Car passenger killed by crash into tree
A woman in her 50s died Wednesday night after the car she was riding in crashed into a tree in Kahaluu.
She was the rear-seat passenger, police said.
Police said the driver, a man in his 50s, was seriously injured when the 1995 Toyota station wagon he was driving struck a tree at about 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Ahuimanu Road and Ahuimanu Place.
Emergency Medical Services transported the woman in extremely critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she died, authorities said. The driver was taken to Queen’s in serious condition.
Police Lt. Robert Towne said it appeared the couple lived in the car, which also contained yard-cleaning equipment and roosters.
Towne said the driver may have been distracted or was under the influence of an intoxicant.
Police began contraflowing Ahuimanu Road at about 7:30 p.m.
3 injured in Waimanalo highway collision
Three people were injured in a two-car collision on Kalanianaole Highway in Waimanalo on Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency Medical Services said a 51-year-old woman, the driver of one of the vehicles, was taken in serious condition to the hospital after the 3:15 p.m. crash.
Her passengers, a woman, 21, and a man, 22, were transported to the hospital in stable condition, EMSsaid.
Police shut down the highway in both directions between Huli and Nalu streets and reopened it shortly after 4 p.m.
