Maryknoll point guard Kaleb Gilmore does more than play a good game — he watches a good game, as well.
Gilmore scored 14 of his 30 points in a run to begin the fourth quarter to help No. 3 Maryknoll beat No. 2 ‘Iolani 69-60 in front of a loud crowd at ‘Iolani on Saturday night.
Gilmore sat on the bench for the last 2 minutes, 15 seconds of the third quarter, watching ‘Iolani drop a 12-point deficit to three.
The Raiders enjoyed a 9-for-12 effort from the line in that stretch, while the Spartans didn’t get to the line once. ‘Iolani took 21 free throws to Maryknoll’s four in the quarter, but it evened out at the end, with Maryknoll hitting 22 of 30 and ‘Iolani making 22 of 34.
"That’s just the way it goes," Maryknoll coach Kelly Grant said. "Our third quarter has always been our nemesis, but we still had the lead after the third, so I was pleased with that."
When the team took the floor after the break, Gilmore applied what he learned in his mandated rest period, and ‘Iolani didn’t have a prayer of stopping him.
"I noticed that someone needed to take the lead and I just thought it could be me," Gilmore said. "I can notice what we are doing wrong, what we can improve on and just help the team win. I saw a whole bunch of holes and I just tried to take advantage of them."
Gilmore doubled the Spartans’ lead with a 3-pointer out of the break, then hit a pair of free throws and a floater before burying another trey to run it to 51-40. ‘Iolani fought back on a pair of 3-pointers by Ikaika Phillip, who led the Raiders with 21 points, but Gilmore’s heroics were too much to overcome.
Maryknoll has won nine games in a row and improved to 3-0 in the ILH, while ‘Iolani dropped to 2-1. The Spartans host Kamehameha on Wednesday on the same day that the Raiders visit Punahou. Maryknoll gets Punahou two days after that, giving them three big games in a row.
That might give the Spartans a little bit more alone time, as Grant and his staff purposely stayed away from the Spartans’ locker room before the game, just sitting in the stands and waiting for his boys to emerge for game time.
"This is huge," Grant said. "Any time you can come into ‘Iolani and win, that’s a big win. I played it like it was any other game, I didn’t want to add any stress, but they knew. I didn’t have to say anything. We were prepared."
