Man, 39, dies after his kayak capsizes
A 39-year-old man died Sunday after his kayak flipped over off Aweoweo Beach Park in Waialua.
Bystanders told paramedics the man was on a kayak when it overturned at about 1:25 p.m., Emergency Medical Services said.
He was pulled from under the water and brought to shore, where first responders began CPR.
Paramedics transported the man in critical condition to a Wahiawa General Hospital, where he later died.
Boy shoots himself in the leg with a rifle
A 12-year-old Kula boy accidentally shot himself in the leg Sunday morning with a .22-caliber rifle but did not sustain life-threatening injuries, according to the Maui County Fire Department.
Maui Fire Department spokesman Lt. William Juan said the boy was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center after the 10:25 a.m. incident and was treated and released. No other details were available.
Fire displaces pair of Big Island seniors
An elderly couple was injured early Sunday morning in a Kurtistown structure fire, Hawaii County fire officials said.
Firefighters arrived at the home on Opeapea Street in the Hawaiian Acres subdivision at about 5:30 a.m. to find live power lines down and a 900-square-foot structure completely ablaze.
The man and woman who occupied the home were able to escape but had to be taken to a nearby hospital, officials said.
Crews had the fire under control within 10 minutes and extinguished it at about 7 a.m., according to officials.
The walls and floor of the unfinished home were wood, and the roof was metal. Damage was estimated at $105,000.
Officials said the cause of the blaze is being investigated.
