Hight aims for Olympic snowboard team
Kauai-born Elena Hight continues her quest for a third Olympics when she competes in the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association’s qualifiers that begin today at Mammoth Mountain, Calif.
The 24-year-old is a half-pipe specialist. The Hanalei native, whose family still lives on Kauai, placed sixth as a 16-year-old at the 2006 Games in Turin and was 10th at the 2010 Games in Vancouver.
At last year’s X Games, Hight became the first snowboarder — male or female — to successfully land a double backside alley-oop in competition. She was also featured in last summer’s ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue.
The USSSA is tripling up on its qualifiers this week after canceling last week’s event in Colorado. Qualifiers Nos. 3 and 4 are scheduled to be run today with the fifth and final qualifier Sunday.
The U.S. team for the Sochi Olympics will be announced Sunday.
Stewart tops at bodysurfing event
Mike Stewart was named the top individual performer at last weekend’s Da Hui Invitational bodysurfing expression session at Banzai Pipeline.
Best tube ride went to Steve Kapela, best trick to Barry Holt and best wave to Sean Enoka. The best wipeout award went to Sanja Duplessis.
Team North Shore, which included Mark Cunningham, Larry Russo, Rick Thomas and Todd Sells, took first place out of the five teams entered.
