Given the spotlight, Keau Fey basked in it.
The 6-foot senior scored 12 points, blocked six shots and hauled in a career-high 21 rebounds as No. 2 Punahou overpowered No. 9 ‘Iolani 53-35 on Saturday at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium.
"It’s taken me a long time to open up and play like that, but it’s all about the team," Fey said.
The ILH girls basketball game was originally scheduled as a Punahou home game, then was moved to Mid-Pacific because of a wrestling meet at Hemmeter Fieldhouse. When the league decided to have the game air on TV as part of a doubleheader, the contest was moved to the Kamehameha campus.
It was all good for Punahou, which won its seventh in a row since losing to Maryknoll in its league opener. ‘Iolani slipped to 4-4 in league play and 11-7 overall.
The Buffanblu (9-2 overall) were in command from the start thanks to the interior play of Fey and Tyra Moe, who had eight points, five rebounds and three blocks.
The chemistry between the two posts is another Buffanblu weapon.
"It’s awesome with Tyra. It’s taken us a few games to get used to each other, but now we also know what the other one is going to do with the ball," Fey said.
Hailey Motooka led a deep backcourt with 13 points and Kamaile Kandiah chipped in with eight points. The springy, energetic Fey, however, was a problem the Raiders could not solve.
Fey was economical (6-for-10 from the field), but also had three assists and two steals.
"She’s getting better with every game. She’s feeling confident with what she can do," Punahou coach Kevin Velasco said. "I’m pleased with her progress all the way."
Punahou roared to an 8-0 lead before the first TV timeout was called and stretched the lead to 26-10 by halftime. ‘Iolani was cold from the 3-point arc — 3-for-15 — against Punahou’s tough man-to-man defense and there wasn’t much low-post offense, particularly with Fey and Moe patrolling the paint.
The Raiders managed to bring the lead down to 36-21 in the third quarter after Sunshine Saucedo hit back-to-back buckets. Punahou answered with a 7-2 run to close the third quarter.
The Raiders cut the lead to 44-31 early in the fourth quarter after freshman Camy Aguinaldo and Jade Botelho hit 3-pointers, but they got no closer.
Botelho led ‘Iolani with 15 points. Aguinaldo added nine.
For Fey, there is no preference among the three sports she participates in: volleyball, basketball and water polo.
"I put all of my heart into the sport that I’m playing," she said.
