Isles’ mayors head to Washington meeting
Hawaii’s four mayors are traveling to Washington, D.C., for the U.S. Conference of Mayors 82nd Winter Meeting.
Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi, chairman of the Hawaii Conference of Mayors; Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell; Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa; and Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho will join more than 280 of the nation’s mayors at the conference, according to a Hawaii County news release issued Monday. Kenoi is also a member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors National Advisory Board.
The mayors will meet with President Barack Obama and members of his Cabinet at the White House to discuss issues that affect municipalities, including trade, technology, climate change and affordable health care, the release said. Participants at the conference will include U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.
Pig hunting at Kauai canyon begins Feb. 1
Feral pig hunting season in the Kokee-Waimea Canyon area during weekends and state holidays will start Feb. 1.
The season in Hunting Unit A consists of portions of Puu Ka Pele Forest and portions of Kekaha game management area. The season will end June 29.
Hawaii residents interested in hunting feral pig in Unit A are required to acquire a permit from the Kauai office of the Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife.
Hunters may pick up their permits in the Lihue office at 3060 Eiwa St., Room 306. Hunters must present their 2013-2014 Hawaii hunting license when obtaining their permit. Another person may pick up a permit but must present the license of the hunter who applied.
Hunters must sign in and sign out at either the Kokee or Kekaha checking stations each day. The use of hunting dogs will not be permitted in Unit A. The bag limit will be one pig per hunter per day.
Portions of the same area will also open to archers only for feral pig hunting on these days. No permit will be required for this area, but each hunter must sign in and sign out at the Kokee checking station. Only legal archery equipment may be used.
